He mentioned that six and a half years ago, OpenAI's top token burner used 100,000 tokens a month, which was likely the world leader at the time. However, today, the per capita average in the world is around 100 billion tokens a month, and the token leader at OpenAI uses an astonishing 100 billion tokens a month.
This high level of token spending is not unique to OpenAI. The company has a token leaderboard, and employees sometimes showcase their impressive totals on social media platforms. OpenAI also sells tokens, which further encourages this spending culture. However, other companies are taking a different approach. Amazon has shut down its token leaderboard, and Uber has set token caps after its COO expressed concerns about the justification for such high spending.
Altman acknowledged the sudden shift in perspective regarding AI costs. He noted that at the beginning of 2026, the issue of spending was not a concern. However, now, AI costs have become a "huge issue."
